Biosafety FAQ's

Who should I contact to have my biosafety cabinet serviced or certified?

For annual biosafety cabinet recertification, please contact MTA USA at 1-800-788-1312 or email paulah@mtausa.com to schedule an appointment.

What are the requirements for conducting Biosafety Level 2 research?

Standards for research and clinical laboratories are outlined by the Centers for Disease Control in the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) document, available here. Additionally, refer to the ABSA guidelines available here.

I have an active IBC approval for recombinant work and have submitted a new research proposal. Should I submit a new IBC or amend the current protocol?

You should amend your current umbrella protocol to include the new research proposal by updating the summary statement and modifying the microorganism and rDNA sections as needed.

Do I need to register with the IBC if I am working with E. coli K12, plasmids, and Saccharomyces?

Yes, you must register with the IBC. Depending on the genetic material being manipulated, this may require a simple registration or a full review and approval by the IBC. Please submit an IBC application.

In what order should I submit my IACUC and IBC applications?

There is no required order for submitting IACUC and IBC applications. However, IACUC final approval will not be granted until IBC approval is received. To avoid delays, it is advisable to submit your IBC proposal before or simultaneously with your IACUC proposal.

Will my laboratory be audited or inspected?

Yes, annual laboratory inspections are conducted by the Biosafety Officer. Additionally, OUHSC laboratories are subject to inspections by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, as well as funding and accrediting agencies.

How often does the IBC meet?

How can I determine the appropriate biosafety level for the infectious agents I work with?

Are all viral vectors the same, and why does the gene insert make a difference?

No, all viral vectors are not the same. The class of gene insert can change the biosafety level of the construct.

How can I obtain a Biosafety Approval letter for a grant application?

Request a copy by emailing IBC@ouhsc.edu or ask your Principal Investigator (PI) for a copy. Approval letters are sent to the PI once the protocol has been approved.
