Study Participants

The OU Office for Human Research Participant Protection (HRPP) and Institutional Review Boards (IRB) work to protect the rights, privacy, and safety of all people who volunteer to participate in research. One way to further this mission, is to provide you with access to information so you can learn more about what is research, what are the laws and rules in place to protect you and others who participate in research, and other resources about participating in research.

Before you decide to enroll in or participate in a research study, it is important to understand what your rights are as a study participant, and what questions to ask about the research.

Participating is Your Decision

Deciding to participate in a research study is personal, important choice. When thinking about volunteering to participate in a research study or clinical trial, you can:

  • Talk with family, friends, or others before making a decision
  • Ask as many questions as you want
  • Change your mind at any time
  • Leave a research study at any time knowing that the treatments or services you receive from your doctor, clinical, hospital, or others will not be affected.

Ask Questions

Before volunteering or agreeing to participate in a research study, you should ask specific questions to understand what to expect, such as:

  • What is the research study (or clinical trial) about?
  • What will I be asked to do?
  • How much time will it take?
  • Are there potential side effects or risks?
  • Will I be billed for any costs?
  • Will I be compensated for my time?
  • How do I leave the study after I start?
  • Who can I contact with questions or concerns?

Visit the links below for lists of questions you can pull up on your phone or print and take with you to meetings with study personnel:
